See the House in which Rembrandt Van Rijn led his fascinating and ultimately tragic life!
Rembrandt is Amsterdam’s most famous artist, a genius whose work changed the artistic world forever. His techniques in depicting movement revolutionised portraiture. His home between 1639 and 1656 is located close to the city center and has been meticulously reconstructed with an accurate 17th century interior.
Rembrandt lived a complicated life. A uniquely prolific and versatile master painter, he achieved success as a painter at a young age. However, Rembrandt’s life was marred by tragedy. He lost several children in infancy and eventually his wife, Saskia to illness. He spent excessively and was unable to support his lifestyle. Eventually, he was overcome by debt and was forced to sell his home and belongings.
It is from the auction lists of those sales that Rembrandt House has been reconstructed. In addition to providing a fascinating opportunity to see how Rembrandt and his contemporaries lived, the house also includes reproductions of his tools. Not only that, but it is also the home of a huge collection of Rembrandt’s works!
